Farm Happenings for July 5, 2023

Posted on July 1st, 2023 by Trent Loewen

Happy Canada Day! We’ve all been looking forward to this first week of Farm Shares. It’s been an amazing start to the season already! May was so warm that everything got off to a great start. We didn’t lose many days to bad weather, and with Sara home all the time we’ve managed to mostly keep up with the work. We’ve even had time to go camping and fishing!

There’s a good variety of produce for this time of year. Lots of greens of course, including arugula and baby kale, but also radishes, green onions, garlic scapes (what’s that?!), kohlrabi, and zucchini. Cherry tomatoes are just starting, and the cucumbers have a very serious spider mite problem, so they’re both in short supply right now. We expect the salad turnips, carrots, and baby potatoes to be ready in the next week or so, also the first of the tomatoes.

A few notes on the veggies this week:
    - The Gourmet Salad Mix, baby kale, and arugula are kind of one time items, depending on whether we can get a good harvest of the baby kale and arugula.
    - We are no longer wrapping or bagging the cucumbers, to reduce plastic, so you’ll want to bag or wrap them as soon as you can to prevent them from going limp.

Your box will be built automatically with only produce in it but everything else is available to swap in. Besides the produce, there is pasture-raised eggs, fresh baking (baked by my Mom), handmade soap from The Sudsy Llama, and our homemade ranch dressing.

As always, if you have any trouble with swapping or anything else, you’re welcome to call/text or email. Trent - 306-883-8832, Lois - 306-883-9289. Also the folks at Harvie are happy to help, reach them at support@harvie.farm.

Have a great week!
