Farm Happenings for June 29, 2022

Posted on June 25th, 2022 by Trent Loewen

Hey, it’s the first week of Farm Shares! We’ve all been looking forward to this for a while. So to start with, it’s mostly greens that are ready right now, as well as radishes and some herbs. Go ahead and look through the items available. Your box will be built automatically with only produce in it but everything else is available to swap in. Besides the produce, there is grass-fed beef from Barnes Creek Ranch, pasture-raised eggs, fresh baking (baked by my Mom), handmade soap from The Sudsy Llama, and our homemade ranch dressing.

A few notes on the veggies this week:
    - The spinach will only be available for a week or two longer so go ahead and stock up on it, even putting it in the freezer for use later in smoothies, casseroles, etc.
    - The Gourmet Salad Mix, baby kale, and arugula are kind of one time items, depending on whether we can get a good harvest of the baby kale and arugula.
    - The salad turnips are a bit disappointing, we're losing them to the worms. They are available to swap into your box, but might need some trimming up before you eat them. Hopefully the next planting will be better.

Spring was a bit slow for everything to get going, but it’s all growing now. The cucumbers are just getting started, green onions will be ready next week, and the tomatoes are rapidly setting on.

One surprise for us this spring was how well the strawberries overwintered. We didn’t expect them to survive and were intending to plant something else in that space. Because of the snow cover, they survived and regrew so well that we left them in and it looks like a good crop of strawberries will be ready in a few weeks!

As always, if you have any trouble with swapping or anything else, you’re welcome to call/text or email. Trent - 306-883-8832, Lois - 306-883-9289. Also the folks at Harvie are happy to help, reach them at support@harvie.farm.

Have a great week!
