Farm Happenings for Sat. Dec. 16th & Sun. Dec 17th

We got lucky with the warm weather this weekend and the Sunday rains pretty much held off during pickup. Hopefully, after Monday the good weather will stay with us for next weekend. Hope everyone is enjoying the winter veggies. The process for growing our fall/winter crops for the CSA starts way back in August when we seed down celery, collards, fennel, bok choy, and the other long term vegetables. They go into greenhouses as soon as we're through with the summer crops like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Even before the warm crops the houses grew organic vegetable transplants for our garden center, so these fall crops are their third rotation. Usually, the produce is pretty picked out by mid-February so the greenhouses can get a couple of weeks rest before the cycle starts again. 

Once the houses are full of your CSA crops they've got to be watered and cultivated and monitored for bugs and small critters. When the nights turn colder we turn on minimal heat or cover them with a special cloth that keeps them warm. Finally their time comes and when you've finished filling out your menu and making your swaps, the software system generates a pick list for the crew to begin harvesting for the weekend. This week we'll be offering lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, leeks, cilantro, radishes, frozen blueberries, Napa cabbage and fennel.

If you need to change your pickup day, just let us know and we'll have your box ready. We don't like to put in the perishables until the morning you pick up so the greens stay as fresh as possible! Take care and see you on the 16th or 17th.
