Farm Happenings for August 25, 2020

Posted on August 22nd, 2020 by Ryan Thompson

Wow! I can’t believe it! We are already over the halfway point of our main CSA season! Time is flying by, and I’ve realized I haven’t been very good at giving updates from here on the farm.

Our fall planting of cole crops are looking good. We should have broccoli and cauliflower in September, if it all goes as planned. Finally! As our first 2.5 plantings failed this year. We were pretty surprised and bummed as we typically always have good crops of broccoli & cauliflower. But, it happened for multiple reasons...weather; hot, dry, then too much rain, etc. At least these next ones are so far going as planned.

our next planting of cucumbers and zucchini are just starting up again. We will see those in the boxes again this week. There are many different ways you can use zucchini. Shred and use in zucchini bread, cakes, or cookies. Or simply add it shredded to your taco meat or spaghetti sauce. Your kids won’t even taste a difference. We love to make a cheesy sausage, rice, zucchini and tomato hot dish, at least once during the season. It’s so good. We also like zucchini fritters, or just throwing them on the grill with onions, little olive oil and seasonings. So yum.

winter squash is just starting to ripen. I like to start the first week of the squash season with spaghetti squash, only because it doesn’t seem to much like fall yet. The rest of the winter squash just only seems right to eat once it starts getting cooler out. HahA...but that’s probably just me.

anyways, we are still plugging along in the farming perspective. Its peak of the season and the boys just finished (almost) our high tunnel for our fall CSA...just need the plastic on it. The veggies are planted in there and as long as it all goes as planned we will have some good boxes!

hope you all have a great week and enjoy your “last week” of summer!
