Savoring summer and welcoming fall

Posted on September 16th, 2023 by Ashley Thompson

We are so excited to bring you beautiful purple + white cauliflower in boxes this week.  We don't grow a lot of broccoli or cauliflower on our farm because it takes up so much space, but this is the time of year the plants do their best, so we planned this planting just for you!

Cauliflower loves to head at different times, even when planted and treated exactly the same.  It also grows inconsistently, meaning we get heads of all sizes, at different times, making it hard for a small farm to have enough of similarly sized cauliflower at the same time for CSA boxes.  Because of this we're working on focusing in on which varieties do best and when so that we can dedicate enough space to supply our full program.  Despite our best efforts, we don't have quite enough of one color, so you may find either color in your box this week.

I love cauliflower as an easy side this time of year, and the key for the perfect crisp is not overloading your pan!  Full instructions and seasoning ideas can be found here.

We're also hoarding some of our final summer crops for you this week, we've got two types of tomatoes and two types of cucumbers to make sure there's enough to go around.  The plants are slowing down, but this warm weather has really helped our heirloom tomatoes ripen so we want to share them with you one last time.

This week also brings the last scallions, as our field is winding down and only the hardiest crops will remain, soon.  We expect our first light frost in the next week or two, which we'd welcome, as it will allow us to harvest our winter squash and welcome a new season.

Eat well this week,

Ashley, Caleb and the Sungrounded Crew
