GARLIC SCAPES ARE HERE

Posted on June 5th, 2021 by Ashley Thompson

We're always so excited to include garlic scapes in shares, as it's such a special moment in the growing year.  Garlic Scapes are the flower shoot of hardneck garlic, which happens to grow in a whimsical curly-Q.  It's best for garlic production to remove them anyway, and luckily they're also delicious.  We pick them as soon as they curl, and only have them for about 2-3 weeks of the year, so they're certainly something to savor and enjoy when they're here because before you know it, they'll be out of season again.  Scapes are delicious just about any way you'd like to eat them; I'd highly recommend grilling them, or chop them up and sauté them into whatever you're cooking--we even pickle them.  You can eat nearly the whole thing, from the stalk all the way up to the flower bud.

Also new this week-- Broccoli Raab, Rainbow Chard and Green Onions!  Back again are staples like salad greens and carrots, and one more serving of peas while our greenhouse bed is still pumping them out.  We're planning on a break in peas after this week until our larger sowing in the field is ready, so get them this week if you want them!

Don't forget to bring back your boxes if you took them home with you, and be careful when collapsing them, when the bottom flaps get too ripped we have to throw them out, and like to get as much use as possible out of them!  On the note of returnables, we can also accept for re-use: returned box liners (only if clean, or reuse it as a trash bag!), clean one-dozen egg cartons, and clean paper pulp containers.  If you choose to return any of these smaller items, please put them in the tote at your pickup site if possible.
