Farm Happenings for October 12, 2022

Posted on October 8th, 2022 by Peter Seely

Bill and Ketari and Mary Pedersen helping with the celery harvest!

This week's offerings: More hakurei turnips, and chinese cabbage, and radishes (available for swap or purchase) this week.  And the celery that we thought we were sending out last week!  Lots of greens again -- spinach, salad mix, and arugula.  And lots of peppers --- we picked the plants pretty clean, so there are many to distribute!  We barely can get one tomato per tote, so they are nearly done!   Also available for purchase is Dave Bohnhoff's pears.  We have often distributed his apples in the past, and this year we have his pears. (They were grown organically.)  We also have a few apples left from the Molter Orchard that we had last week as well.

Coming soon:  Gold potatoes, red onions for everyone, tetsukabuto winter squash (a new one!), and some nice kale, as you see in the picture below!  And Brussels sprouts in a couple weeks!

On the farm: We did have a mild frost, which ended the season for some of the crops.  But we did haul in what was harvestable before the freeze! Some crops, like the kale, and the Brussels sprouts, actually taste a little sweeter after they have been through freezing temperatures.  Greenhouses are getting planted with greens to extend the season for those items.  Celery again next week so we can transplant some spinach into that greenhouse soon!

Reminder of remaining deliveries:  After this week's delivery, there will be three more deliveries to conclude the regular season.  After that, every two weeks, we will have deliveries for another three times, which is our fall season share, and if you hadn't signed up for it you will still be able to sign up in the next couple weeks; details next time!  (You can check in your Harvie account if you signed up for it.)  (Speaking of Harvie, we continue to do some research into options for next year, and one group that has developed an algorithm and software platform similar to the Harvie system we have been using for a couple years, seems promising to us, so we might switch to them.  We will let you know!

Educational, inspirational, and fun: Although we have been aware of, and seen books by, both Dan Barber, and Jamie Oliver, we hadn't come across these talks by them, even though they are over a decade old at this point.  But very much relevant today, as some of us organic/sustainable/regenerative farmers try to put into practice what they talk about, and as parents and consumers we all attempt to make good choices

Here they are:

Enjoy, and have a good week!
