Farm Happenings for September 21, 2022

Posted on September 18th, 2022 by Peter Seely

Cilantro crew making bunches!

This week's offering: Scallions again after a long hiatus. Some get spinach this week, too! New crops: Chinese cabbage, and jalapeno peppers. (To get the peppers you would need to swap or purchase them separately; we did not expect that most of you would have wanted to receive them automatically.)  We were able to get green beans one more time.   The watermelon that many of you are signed to get could be either a seedless red, or a yellow-fleshed variety. This week's potatoes are red potatoes.   Squash for this week is the Heart of gold variety. See the picture below! Lots of other items available through Harvie!

This week's carrots includes some purple carrots!

Coming soon: Arugula, sweet potatoes, more leeks, spinach, poblano peppers

On the farm: (Or actually, not on the farm, but in Michigan)  Peter attended a field day in Michigan last week where an assortment of weeding implements were showcased.  Weeds continue to be a problem for us, so it's nice to see what all is out there to help us keep them at a minimum!  Newest implements include a tool which includes a camera, with the appropriate tillage tools controlled by the camera so that all of the weeds get eradicated, but none of the desired crop.  Seemed to work pretty well, too!  (Though its price tag would be more than we could ever justify given our 'small' acreage of 30 or so acres of vegetables!)   Would be nice to have soil that doesn't include any rocks, like this sandy soil at the Michigan State Experimental Station!

Have a good week!
