Farm Happenings for August 12, 2022

Posted on August 9th, 2022 by Peter Seely

Packing day at the farm!

Slightly late note this week!  Apologies!

This week's offerings:  Melons are coming on! For the next month or so, there should be some watermelons, cantaloupes, and some honeydew melons.  We are seeing just about the last of the summer squash.  And broccoli starting to come on!

Coming soon: Sweet corn was almost ready for this coming week, but will probably have to wait for the following week. Frying pepper or peppers next week!  Sweet potatoes looking nice at this point, though they would not be harvested till late September.  We dug a few (regular) potatoes, and size may be down a little from other years; both a lack of water, and an abundance of weeds, has cut into their yield some.  Garlic is all harvested, and we have a good supply of nice bulbs, and now soon all of the onions will have to be cleared out of the field and brought in as well.  Our last planting of cukes is several weeks away, so there will be a little less cucumbers for the next few weeks.  Our final zucchini planting looks great, so we should have them up until the frost.  Michigan peaches coming soon!

New Harvie feature:  Seems that we are now able to expand the list of items that can be swapped for, so you might find that if you try that option.  We are somewhat ambivalent about Harvie overall -- overall it seems to work quite well for both you, the members, and us, the growers, but sometimes there are hiccups, and frustrations, and it's also fairly costly.  A rough guess is that we could send out 20-25% more produce your way if we would revert back to the old system, where everyone would receive the same list of vegetables.  Should we consider reverting back to the old system, perhaps with some modifications, so that some veggies could be chosen, to augment a standard list of staples that all would share in common?  Or are you fairly happy overall with the Harvie platform?  If you feel strongly either way, feel free to send us a quick e-mail!  Thanks!

Have a great week!
