Farm Happenings for October 30, 2020

Posted on October 27th, 2020 by Peter Seely

Justice McKay, the coordinator of this year's hemp crop, happy to get on with the harvesting!

This week's offerings:  this week's celery is not fully grown, to be sure, but with the temperature dipping into the mid 20's this coming week, we figured 'Better something than nothing!', so we will be harvesting it at the smaller stage, and sending it your way on Wednesday (assuming you have rated it on the higher end, and your tote has not already become filled with other items!)  Some nicer carrots for everyone this week, though some of the larger carrots still available at a reduced price in with the Extras. New crop: Brussels sprouts!   We won't have as many as other years, but still some to enjoy!  We picked the last of the tomatoes, and many were picked on the greener side, so wait several days for it to ripen up on your counter.  And if you want some 100% green tomatoes (to make chutney, or relish, or whatever), we have a bunch in the store ready to send your way!  And kimchi fixings available there as well -- everything you need to get a batch going. (We can send a link to our favorite kimchi recipe in our next note in a couple days.) This week we see the last of the parsley, and of the cherry tomatoes too!

Coming up: Next week we will have garlic, and mushrooms from Gourmet's Delight!  And soon to be posted at the Barn2Door site, frozen organic blueberries for the final pick-up on November 13th, and one more chance to get some Brightonwoods Orchard apples.

Reminder of last delivery dates: We will be preparing boxes for two more weeks after this week!  (So November 6th and November 13th.)  Of course, those of you who are on an every-other-week schedule will have to figure out when your last delivery date is.  Or look it up at your Harvie account, where you should find a record of all deliveries for the season!  And speaking of Harvie, we appreciate all that Harvie has made possible for you, and for us, though we also feel that there is room for improvement in their service! So we continue with suggestions for fine-tuning (or even occasionally for some rough-tuning)!

Thanksgiving and Storage share deliveries: These are optional deliveries separate from the main season (ending on November 13th, as mentioned above).  Delivery dates for them are November 20th, and December 13th.  Many of you have already signed up for one, or both, of them.  Both of them will consist primarily of storage crops (like carrots, beets, potatoes, onions, cabbage, sweet potatoes, parsnips, rutabagas, butternut squash), but will also include some (organic) cranberries, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, and possibly other crops such as salad mix or spinach from the greenhouse, kale, etc.  There will still be the option to switch items, or to purchase extra items (including eggs, butter, etc.), like your shares during the regular season.  Deadline to sign up for them will be a week before the actual delivery.  You can sign up for them by going to our website, and clicking on "Sign up!" button at the top right of the home page.

CBD products: As you will see from the card that will be going into your share this week, we have a variety of CBD products available, that can be purchased and put into one of your last totes of the season. (Or we can simply mail them to you via the U.S. postal service.) Fuller descriptions, and ordering info, can be found at our website (springdalefarm.com), where you can click on the "HEMP & CBD" page.

Winter plans:  At this point, because of the covid situation, we don't plan on being vendors at the indoor markets that we have been a part of for many years (and hopefully again in future years!), but will periodically let you know about either a home delivery service, or meet-up points where you can go on-line and order items that would be available.  Stay tuned in late December (after our storage share on December 9th).
