Farm Happenings for October 14, 2020

Posted on October 10th, 2020 by Peter Seely

This week's fennel ready for harvest

This week's line-up:  In addition to fennel, we send along delicata, sweet potatoes, some greens, some large (good for kraut) cabbage, tomatoes, etc. Also, we mistakenly gave only 1 daikon radish last week, (instead of 3), so we are listing it again, in the hopes that those of you who were supposed to get it will get it again this week. (It also was given a tiny value, so it will not be replacing something else that you might have gotten this week.)  Carrots are available as an add-on -- these carrots are good for cooking, but not fantastic for fresh eating. Lots of tomatillos available as well!

Cortland, and Northwest Greening apples available as well: From Brightonwoods Orchard near Burlington, we have both kinds of apples available to purchase, either as a 3 lb. bag, or 20 lb. tote.  (These are IPM apples, and not organically-grown.) Here's the link to the Barn2Door site to order the apples:  https://app.barn2door.com/e/32GNQ

Bill Stoneman, the owner of the orchard, ran a little short of the Tolman Sweet apples, which is what we originally were planning on, but thought we would be happy with the Northwest Greenings, so substituted them for us. The Greenings are an excellent cooking apple, and stores extremely well, in addition to being a good fresh eating apple.

Reminder of last deliveries:  October 21 and 28, and November 4 and 11!

Getting rid of your old vehicle? We could use an older but still functioning vehicle (minivans work great!) to shuttle people, plants, tools, vegetables, etc. between our fields, so if you about to get rid of something, we might be able to provide a home for it; thanks!

Harvest update:  Great weather for harvesting -- getting lots of crops off of the fields!
