Farm Happenings for July 31, 2020

Angela Rivers expressing her excitement over this season's cherry tomato harvesting

New vegetables:  This week we introduce some new vegetables --  a bell pepper, onions, and a melon. (Of course, not all of you will receive these; that will depend on your preferences, the size of your share, and the random choosing of Harvie.  But many will get them.  And if you didn't, there might be some that could be swapped for, or purchased.)  We are trialing a lot of different melons this year, so you will be receiving several different kinds over the course of the season (next 6-7 weeks).  Most are small (so that they will fit into your tote!), and hopefully most will have good flavor!  Peppers are coming along well, so you will likely have the option of receiving one of several different kinds of peppers in August and September! Onions will be coming every couple weeks, on average.  We will also have some watermelons coming as well, though they will start in several weeks.  Next week: potatoes!

Minor hiatus with salad mix: Looks like we may have an occasional gap of salad mix, and head lettuce, during the season. This week would be one of them!  Many of you will find some kale in your box which, although not a substitute, at least still provides some fresh greens to put on your plates this week!

Sweet corn possibilities: We might possibly have sweet corn in this week's box, or perhaps next week's box.  Still too early to tell, and we still have problems with the local families of raccoons who also find our corn delicious.  If it would be a late addition, it might not show up on your label.

Thanks to our college interns! Pretty soon we will be losing our fantastic college intern crew of 2020.  While it is still uncertain what their academic experience will be like this fall, we will certainly miss the presence of Sophie Lackner, Sam Worden, Kiva Carman-Frank, and Sabine Peterka!  Also soon departing will be Drew Thomas, Adam Haas, Leo Bohlmann, and Zach Wickert, all with commitments to other jobs and situations. Anybody out there want to help harvest and pack boxes with us this fall?  We will be in need of a few folks to assist us, either full or part-time!

Have a good week!
