The Second Week of the Summer CSA Program is Here!

Posted on July 6th, 2019 by Tadd Petersen

Welcome to the second week of the Summer CSA program!  We hope you all enjoyed the Fourth of July holiday and spent it gathered around good food and good friends.  This is our favorite time of year because the weather is perfect for gathering with friends and firing up the grill.  Fresh, local food is a great reason to gather with family and friends and we have so many delicious varieties you can include on your summer cookout menus. From aromatic basil to freshly harvested cucumbers, we will have plenty of options for you to choose from this week.  Make sure to let us know what you shared at your summer gatherings!  Tag us on Facebook and Instagram so we can share your ideas with the rest of the SHF community.

This week in the fields, the team was busy harvesting many different seasonal varieties including elephant garlic.  Despite its name, this variety is not technically garlic.  It is related to the same species as a leek and has a milder flavor.  A conventional garlic head holds about 20 garlic loaves while elephant garlic has about six very large cloves.  This unique ingredient is delicious roasted in a simple dish or added to a foil packet with some fresh herbs and a protein and placed on the grill.  The team was also able to start planting the fall brassica varieties and the winter squash.  It was a busy week and we cannot wait to share everything we have planned with you.

Thanks!
