Farm Happenings for April 9, 2020

Posted on April 5th, 2020 by Andrea McAdow

Its week two! We hope you enjoyed the first week of CSA as much as we did. Thank you so much for your patience as we work out the initial kinks of the new system and delivering. Things took a bit longer than we had planned to get deliveries out, it was our first time making so many stops. However, like always you were all awesome and it was a lot of fun getting to see each and every one of you.

For those of you getting your first box this week, welcome! We're looking forward to seeing our old friends and meeting some new faces.

On the farm this week we are continuing to transplant more babies (tomatoes, peppers, bok choy, kohlrabi, basil, dahlias), starting new plants, and direct seeding one of our fave crops, green beans! We still have a few weeks left of beautiful spring weather left to grow cooler season greens and herbs but the warm season stuff will follow quickly behind.

We're also fixing up our irrigation system, its been something that has been less than optimal for a while. Low water pressure on one side of the property is preventing the drip tape from working as intended (not to mention a few leaks from last year that need to patched) so we'll be troubleshooting and getting things hooked up a bit more efficiently. It should save me a few hours of hand watering a week.

In your boxes we're featuring our pea shoots this week! I personally love these added to a stir fry or tossed into soup. Sauteed with a bit of sesame oil and ginger they are absolutely wonderful.

A quick herb tip: this time of year we have an abundance of amazing fresh herbs. You can preserve them for use later in a number of ways. Nothing needs to go to waste!

For woody herbs like rosemary and oregano, tie them together with twine and hang them in a cool room to dry. Once they're completely dehydrated place them in a spice jar for use all year.

You can also chop your herbs and place them in an ice cube tray, fill the remainder of the cell with olive oil and freeze. You can them place them in a bag in the freezer and grab a few as you need them later in the season.

If you are picking up at the shop I will have boxes stacked up outside again. I will help you find your box and allow you to pack your items up in your re-usable bags. We are trying to keep foot traffic in the shop down. If you would like to go in to purchase additional items we do politely ask that you wash your hands at the sink in the rear of the shop before browsing.

Delivery folks: Reminder to set out your coolers Thursday morning!

PS if you ever have an issue with an item please make sure to let us know. We do our best to make sure everything is packed safely but sometimes things shift in transit. We want to make sure  you're getting top quality every time!

PPS If you were able to purchase a share add on (eggs, beef etc) but we were already sold out of veggie shares you can purchase a farm stand share to order your veggies for the week. Hopefully we'll be able to add more shares in a few weeks!

Your farmer,

Andrea
