Rivendale Farms CSA Newsletter, Week 16 (September 25)

Posted on September 21st, 2018 by Neil Stauffer

Hello Rivendale CSA members. It's always a nice benchmark to the week when I sit to write to you. Thanks for taking the time to read along.

This week we want to mention a few of our new available products--Flagrano shell beans and fresh ginger. Both are unique and delicious local food options that you may not be used to getting from the store.

The flagrano beans are new for us too. Susanna always likes to experiment with different types of beans--like the edamame we had a few weeks ago. This time, it's a fresh shell bean, which means that you will shell the beans out of the pod before eating them. They will cook much quicker than dried beans, but in some ways they are similar. Throw them into almost any fresh dish. We have included simple cooking instructions in the product tips. Give them a try. They are delicious and nutritious.

While dried ginger may be a familiar item, what we are putting in the box is a fresh version of the same. This juicy and fragrant ginger comes to us as "seed" from Hawaii, but we grow it in our greenhouse. Unlike the typical dried version, this fresh ginger has no skin to peel. You can use the entire bulb--including the green tops. We hope you enjoy it. We will probably have it in future weeks as well.

On behalf of the crew,

Neil

ps--This week's pic shows our new arrivals at the farm. We received over 500 new pullet chickens to help replenish our egg supply. These 16-week-old Rhode Island Red/White Rock cross breeds will start laying eggs in another month or so. We are excited to have more eggs to share with our CSA members and restaurant customers.....welcome to life on the pasture, chickens!
