Farm Happenings for August 6, 2019 (week 9)

Posted on August 2nd, 2019 by Neil Stauffer

Hello! Don't forget about our upcoming CSA Farm Tour here at Rivendale on Sunday August 11. Registration is required to attend, and we have a few dozen tickets remaining. Here is the link to sign up and see more details. Keep in mind that space is limited so please be thoughtful when choosing your number of tickets. Thanks. We can't wait to see many of you next weekend--it's going to be fun!

On another note, earlier this month we completed a once-a-year farm task that ends up in some of your CSA shares. It was our wheat harvest. Early in July, we closely watch our 1 acre wheat field to monitor the moisture content of the grain--hoping we don't get too many rainy days. When the wheat kernel gets hard and our moisture reader tells us the water content in the wheat is close to 15% or less, we seize the hottest/driest part of the day to harvest the hard red winter wheat. In the picture, you can see Susanna doing just that with our Korean-made mini combine that works well on small plots of grain (or rice!).

Now that the wheat is harvested we are continuing to dry it, and then we will clean it so that it can be used in our sourdough bread shares for the CSA. Mediterra Bakehouse in Robinson is kind enough to make the loaves for us. And while we may be a little biased, we think it's simply the best bread around.

A quick reminder that we will be glad to take back your empty CSA boxes if they are clean and flattened. Please don't send back any other packaging materials.

Thanks for the support!
