Farm Happenings for August 29, 2020

Posted on August 26th, 2020 by Nate Olive

Thank you to all for coping with last week's adjustments due to TS Laura. Despite the WAPA power outage which shut Leatherback on Saturday, you made adjustments along with us to make our little local food production system work. She spared us the heavy winds, kept the corn up straight, and delivered a much needed 2 inches of rain on the farm.

Tonight we pray for those in her path along the Louisana and Texas coasts as she has grown into a major hurricane that will hit tonight and tomorrow morning.  Irma and Maria taught us once again how powerful nature can be and also our connections with food security on these small islands. Our Community Supported Agriculture/ Farm Share program is all about guaranteeing that we will have local crops even in extreme adversity. So thank YOU for being a part of solution even in troubling times that we all face together. Together we are building resilient systems that can keep small farms alive and household kitchens stocked with fresh, vibrant, organic foods even in hurricane season.

Poetically, this week the farm is seeing a major surge in our red burgundy okra, which is also called "Cajun jewel" for where it was developed in coastal Louisiana. I hope that when you cook it this week that you think of our friends along the gulf coast. I recommend a vegan jambalaya recipe that can incorporate our okra, tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, and other possible ingredients available in your customized box. There are a lot of extra okra bags and tomato pints, so please fell free to trade up for the things you can use.

We are also excited to return to the Farm Tienda this Saturday. Come by for many crop extras, prepared treats from Misfit Island Munchies, and to get out of the house and into the rainforest.

I'd like to give special thanks for our Ridge to Reef Farm Crew, who have all been getting ahead of the game in style with the heavy mulching of fields, a detailed caring of plants, and farm systems improvements that will carry us into our future seasons.

Please enjoy this week's harvest to its fullest,

Nate & the Farm Crew
