A head of schedule

Posted on July 22nd, 2020 by Nate Olive

To say the least, it has been an unusual cropping season this year. Normally, we are struggling to keep plants watered in the peak of summer but this year we have been truly blessed with recurrent rains. Crops are generally ahead of schedule and to great proportions.

I don't ever recall having such success in the summer with lettuce, and now they are throwing out monstrous heads of completely sweet leaves.  Cucumbers usually take 60 days to produce but we are getting healthy yields this week in only 40 days time. Radishes and turnips are threatening to burst at the seams. Jackfruit. Yes, jackfruit. Oh, the mangoes.

In the red category, our delicious tomatoes are taking a break after a huge harvest last week. The recent heat wave affected pollination in the greenhouse so they are going to be a light harvest for us this week.  In the meantime, a fruiting run of outdoor cherry tomatoes might beat them to the race.

So, that’s where the other red - the watermelons come in. This week we are sharing a small heirloom "icebox" type of watermelon called Sugar Baby that can fit in a cooler or farm share box with room to spare. They have thin skin and be eaten to the edge or juiced fully without having to remove the rind. Save the seeds as they will produce the same fruit in case you want plant them in your own home garden.

There are 24 other available items in the inventory this week, so we hope that you get your best box. Please spread the word about our Farm Share program as we have an ample supply of produce this summer. There will be plenty of extras at our Farm Tienda this Saturday on Mahogany Road.

Please enjoy this week's farm share to it's fullest,
