Summer is here!

Posted on June 17th, 2020 by Nate Olive

This week's farm share delivery falls on the Summer solstice and the seasonal change is showing! Warm season crops like our young watermelon patch (pictured above) are loving the longest days of the year while they stretch new vines across the soil and tiny yellow flowers appear. The corn seed that made it past the scratching doves is sprouting and slicer tomatoes in the greenhouse are pollinating well. We are seeing tiny fruits for next month's shares. Today, a blessed rainbow stretched across the valley while we pounded in new field trellises for upcoming cherry tomatoes. The avocadoes are small and hard now, but promising an abundant harvest later in the season. Young breadfruits have formed and we hope the rains will keep them going strong. There is a lot to look forward to this summer as the Farm Share season unfolds:)

In this week's share we have ample cucumbers, arugula, radishes, and turnips among many other veggies and herbs that have rejoiced from the recent rains. We scored a huge jackfruit from the terraces that will be sliced and shared to half of our boxes. Our pineapple crop seems to have peaked so there are less to go around this week. We have really appreciated everyone's feedback on them as they are indeed so juicy and sweet and we are soon planting a lot more for the future with all the young plant suckers. There are still many small pineapple fruits growing so they should be appearing for another month. Some things are worth the wait!

Please feel free to let others know about the Farm Shares as we continually have had more crops than we need each week to fill the shares. We are bringing a lot of extras to our Farm Tienda on Mahogany Rd so if you want more or want to check out Misfit Island Munchies' goodies for sale. Last week she brought out some amazing moringa/wasabi devilled eggs made with Wendell's eggs - I am a huge fan, just leave me some please.

Finally, we are still testing the waters to see when we might offer our next community Slow Down dinner (appropriately social distanced of course), and what form that may take. Please let us know if you might consider joining us for our next event.

In good food,

Nate & the Farm Crew
