Fruit Season is coming for April 4, 2020

Posted on April 1st, 2020 by Nate Olive

Fruit season is just around the corner and some early arrivals are appearing this week.  The dry weather after all the rain is perfect for fruit production and we forecast an above-average mango season along with other fruits that seem to have been holding back since Hurricane Maria. The sugar baby watermelons agree, and are at their sweetest point yet.  We hope that you join on for our Summer Season farm shares to enjoy what's to come. This season we will probably have limted amounts of some of the first pineapples, wax apples, and green mangoes starting to fill out.

Baobab fruits are making an appearance this week. To use them, you can either suck the flesh around the seeds or boil them in water and strain to make a healthy morning drink. In fact, it's famous as a hangover cure and high volumes of vitamin C to help maintain a strong immune system. Just crack open the shell and extract the fruity pulp with seeds into your pot for an amazing drink. These fruits were brought from Africa to St. Croix and are part of the rich heritage of these islands, so enjoy:)

While all the COVID-19 effects are occuring, we are following through with the most stringent food safety measures possible through the entire chain of production possible. We have limited farm visitation and have faced the tough choice of refusing volunteers on the property for a short time until we are able to implement a new volunteer safety program in the works.

It's a time where local food systems have never been so important. We value your commitment to this season and hope that you will join us for an abundant summer soon to come.

In good food,

Nate & the Farm Crew
