Farm Happenings for July 4, 2020

Posted on June 27th, 2020 by Ben Sayler

We are very grateful for the storms we had last week. The rain barrels were nearly empty but they are nearly full. Thank you Mother Nature. On Thursday, we had our big Spring beet harvest. It took 6 of us nearly a full day to harvest all the beets. We will store them in the cold room and use them over the next couple months. Today we finished the garlic harvest of about 7,000 bulbs. We pull all the bulbs and hang to dry so we can store the garlic until you guys eat it all! Once we have harvested these crops, we will prepare the empty fields for fall planting in mid-July. Summer crops are coming in fast and furious! In fact, the new cold room Ben built is full already. We are happy to have more local fruit for you this week – blueberries from Scenic View Orchards. And with some good news, there is always some bad news. Unfortunately, most of our cauliflower crop failed. Apologies to our Saturday members. We want everyone to have the opportunity to try everything we grow at least once. We will have a couple heads at market but when a crop is so limited, we are unable to put it on our CSA list. Hopefully, cauliflower will be available in the fall. And finally, the battle with destructive summer insects, like beetles, has begun. We are trying to stay ahead of them and break their life cycle now. We are also finding plenty of beneficial insects on the farm, like ladybugs and praying mantis, which used to be few and far between. The increased productivity of our soil and seeing all of the beneficial insects is a testament to how Ben has cared for the land he farms.
