Farm Happenings for July 23, 2019

Posted on July 19th, 2019 by Lisa Duff

It's hot out there. We are protecting the crops as best we can with shade cloth and sprinklers...we are protecting ourselves by starting extra early, wearing light colored clothes and hats, staying hydrated and working in the shade or in the barn in the heat of the day.  This heat is as hard on the plants as it is us...we look forward to cooler times but this is Maryland in July!

And it's tomato season!  woot woot the heirlooms are ripening by the bushel, Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, Valencia, German Stripes, Pruden's Purple, German Johnson...all my favorites. The cherries... sun golds explode sweet ripe bursts of perfect tomato flavor, the Lucky Tiger, Blush and Green Tiger are sweet, oblong deliciousness ...the tiny little Jaspers and big Cherry Bombs are all coming forth to see you this week!

WE may even have sweet corn.  I will put it on here and hope for the best-this is an experiment for me, more or less. Growing sweet corn organically is a trick and having it ready for CSA day is another hurdle. IF you get some let us know how it is please.

We have beautiful eggplant-Aretussia is white with a tender edible skin, Dancer is a light purple and the Japanese eggplant are long and darker purple. I love eggplant grilled and roasted; simply prepared, it's one of my favorites.

Sweet Italian peppers are coming in now slowly turning red and yellow...

We are enjoying the bounty of summer.

Bon Appetit!
