Farm Happenings for July 16, 2019

Posted on July 11th, 2019 by Lisa Duff

Garlic!  WE have spent the last week harvesting our garlic. We buy certified seed garlic (Certified Organic German White and Red Hardneck) from Frasier Garlic in upstate NY every fall. Planted in the fall in well composted soil we mulch with organic straw from Fake Family Farm in Red Lion, PA and await the little green spouts to pop through before the cold of winter. They stay dormant until the warmth of spring sends them catapulting up and out. Scapes are plucked in June, bulbs harvested in July.  We sell fresh garlic for the first few weeks and cure the rest. It hangs from the rafters in the barn or turned on shelves in front of a fan until the stalks dry. Once cured the garlic will last for months in a cool, dark place (never the refrigerator!)

This week's (and last week's) garlic is fresh!  Enjoy.

Tomatoes are coming!  We harvested the first of the field tomatoes yesterday-whoopee!  They are just starting to come in.

So you will be seeing them soon, along with more eggplant and some peppers.

WE grow white Aretussa eggplants with tender, sweeter skin and a shorter shelf that traditional eggplants. Try them roasted in a veggie medley they will melt in your mouth! We also have Japanese eggplants, Orient Charm and Orient Express and Dancer a pretty light purple Italian type.

We will dig potatoes when the soil dries out a bit...soon, very soon we will have potatoes for everyone.

Thanks everyone for supporting local organic; eat your veggies!
