A Squirrel Problem

Posted on July 1st, 2023 by Katherine Nietmann

Welcome to Week 7!

On the farm this week we're all about squirrel control.  I don't know about your gardens, but they are wreaking havoc on our crops and we've decided to do something about it.  At any given time, we can stand in the corner of the farm and count 8+ ground squirrels scurrying about, eating our lettuce, cilantro and carrot tops.  Yes, that means those crops will likely be affected in the coming weeks.  Fortunately, we've hired two young brothers to help us out, and so far they've caught a handful!  We have another professional coming in next week.  Our cats can't keep up and our fall carrots and lettuces are in jeopardy!  If you have any tips, please let us know!

Other than squirrels, we're humming along with weekly seeding, transplanting, harvesting and weed control.  We sowed our first winter crops this week (celery for the heated greenhouses)!

I hope you all have a fantastic July 4th holiday.  We'll be here harvesting vegetables for you before hitting the lake.

We took our annual solstice hike up Bee Top mountain, this year as a family of FOUR!
