Beat the Heat! Try to come as early as possible on Wednesday

Posted on June 26th, 2021 by Katherine Nietmann

Welcome to week 5!

As you're all well aware, we are expected to have high temperatures in the week to come.  If you're able, please come to pick up as early as possible.  The Wednesday pick up start times are:

Annie's Orchard 2:30

Evans Brothers 4:30

This will ensure your produce is as fresh as possible.

Pictured above is cosmos "double click pink".  We have an abundance of flowers now (and through the summer!)  You can always add them to your box as an extra or as part of your regular box.  Some blooms that you can choose from are sunflower, cosmos, stock, snapdragons, dahlias, and soon to bloom zinnias and rudbeckia (black-eyed susans).

An ephemeral item on the list this week is garlic scapes.  These are the would-be flowers of the garlic plant.  It makes no difference to the garlic bulb if you cut the scape or leave it on, but we choose to harvest them and sell them because they are so delicious!  They taste mildly of garlic and have a wonderful, tender texture.  They are great in stir fries, grilled, roasted (but who's turning the oven on these days?!) and in garlic scape pesto.  They will only be around this week and possibly next week.  Snag some while they're here or you'll be waiting another year to try them!

Enjoy your week, stay cool, and eat well!
