Third Spring

Posted on August 15th, 2020 by Katherine Nietmann

FYI:  Including this delivery, there are 9 weeks left in the CSA for both Wednesday and Saturday members.  Remember, we sell produce all fall/winter through our online store, and you don't need to do anything to start ordering it!  Simply visit our online store as soon as the CSA wraps up.

So what the heck does "third spring" mean?  On our farm, we have three main planting times each year.  The first is mid-winter, when we start seeding crops for early spring harvest like arugula, lettuce, mustard greens, beets, carrots, potatoes, and our early tomatoes and bell peppers.

The second spring is late winter/early spring, when we seed the bulk of our summer crops like broccolini, summer squash, winter squash, fall potatoes, beets, carrots and onions, basil, peas, beans etc.

Finally, the "third spring" is what we're wrapping up right now.  We're seeding crops for late fall/winter harvests such as massive plantings of lettuce and spinach, arugula, mustard greens, kale, chard, parsley, cilantro and always a few trials.  These fresh crops, coupled with our storage crops of beets, potatoes, shallots, carrots and watermelon radishes, will feed you (and us!) throughout the entire backside of the calendar.  We feel the same eager anticipation of the fall/winter season starting as we do about the spring/summer season!

Enjoy the produce this week.  Paste/sauce/roma tomatoes debut!
