Halfway: The State of the Farm

Posted on August 1st, 2020 by Katherine Nietmann

We're already half way through the CSA!  Can you believe it?  11 weeks remain; for Wednesday members, the last pickup day is October 14 and for Saturday members the last pickup day is October 17.

At the halfway point, we thought we'd give you an overall picture of how the season is going.

Every year we have enormous successes that we celebrate, sometimes catastrophic failures from which we learn and move on, and increasingly consistent crops with minor hiccups here and there.  This year, we had an enormous success with peas, which we've struggled with in the past.  Meanwhile our early chard, usually an extremely easy crop for us to grow, was a total failure because it was dwarfed by our gigantic peas!  Our Tuscan/dinosaur kale lacks the quality we look for, but our curly green kale will keep providing nearly through to the end of the season without bolting, which is a success for us.  Our tomatoes are above average in terms of quality and yield, but our early bell peppers are yielding less than normal.  Not to worry though because we have a huge second planting about to come on!  Apart from those examples, this season is our best yet and we hope you're enjoying it as much as we are.

Peppers of all types are in abundance this week!  Enjoy your box,

Katherine and Spencer
