Farming the Whole Calendar

Posted on July 12th, 2020 by Katherine Nietmann

We love this time of year.  It's the time of year when we go to sleep when it's still light outside, we wake up when it's light outside, we snack on bell peppers, green beans and cherry tomatoes throughout the day (and strawberries and raspberries from the home garden!), and we don't mind when the sprinklers come on while we're working in the field.

It's the time of year when plantings are like clockwork: we seed things like radishes, arugula, spinach, lettuce, cilantro and microgreens every single week, and they're ready to harvest in a concise, predictable time frame 3-4 weeks later.  It's the time of year when something new is added to the harvest list just about every week, which keeps our jobs interesting (this week it's dahlias!).

It's the time of year when the farm looks amazing, with crops bursting with vigor and color, and our weed control efforts really shine.  Basically it is a time of abundance, and we don't take it for granted.  Since we grow and sell crops all year long, we relish the intensity of the sun, the quick maturity of crops, the seemingly endless harvests, and even the heat and sweat that are conspicuously missing in the back half of the year!  Farming the whole calendar gives us perspective that summer farming never can, and there is much to appreciate in every season.  We try hard not to take any season for granted.

Enjoy your produce this week, especially the orange bell peppers that are truly amazing!
