Farm Happenings for October 2, 2023 - The 'Unexpected' edition

Posted on September 30th, 2023 by Mike Milsom

It seems that every year, there is a crop or two that goes really well, a crop that is less than great...and then there is that one that does something that is well....unexpected.

This year's 'Unexpected Award' goes to the lovely row of Romanesco broccoli that we are apparently growing. The first clue would have been that the plants were not like all the others in their row...lol.

So what does Romanesco broccoli taste like? Though it looks more like cauliflower in texture and form, romanesco's taste is more like broccoli – mild and nutty with sweeter notes that lend well to savory pairings. An easy way to use it is to roast with olive oil, then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Yum!

We only have 75 that are ready this week so they are being offered on a first come, first serve basis.

As many of you are prepping for Thanksgiving we have pulled out ALLLLL the stops. Making their debut this week are the Touchstone Gold and Chioggia beets. The featured squash is the ever popular Butternut and for those of you yearning for peppers there are both sweet and hot pepper mixes available.

All in all, there will be lots to choose from both the familiar and the unexpected.

Enjoy :-)
