First Signs of Fall

Posted on August 28th, 2021 by Brittany Reardon

As hot as it has been, we're already seeing the first signs of fall. The days are getting just a bit shorter, and the breeze in the early hours is reminiscent of fall mornings. Winter squash are starting to come in from the field - we harvested baby butternuts, delicata and acorn squash last week. You might not feel like turning on the oven right now, but they're ready to go into your late summer meals. They are great to throw on the grill as well. Because of the wet, hot and humid weather of the past few weeks, we don't expect these squash to store very long, so use them up!

Tomatoes are going to come to a close as fast as they got here. You'll notice them start to trickle down in quantity on the harvest list, but you'll see new things come on. There's lots of herbs & salad greens and lots more on the list this week. BABY GINGER is on the list too, which is more flavorful but with less heat than the ginger that you typically find in the grocery store (I call it adult ginger). You can use it the same way as you would use any ginger, but there's no need to peel the skin! It's got a thinner skin, so you can chop the whole piece up and throw into a stir fry, use in a cocktail, or if you're feeling adventurous, try candying or pickling! It also freezes beautifully, so if you don't use it all right away, stick it in a freezer bag and put in the freezer. Just be sure to use it up or freeze within two to three weeks.

There's just so much delicious fruit from local folks that we can't help but put them on the share list while the harvest is abundant!

APPLES from Orchard Valley Farm (Strathmeyer Farm). Ginger Gold and Gala are available to swap into your share. There's bulk apples available on the extras list for baking or applesauce making, too.

PEACHES are also from Orchard Valley Farm, they're the same variety as last week and this will likely be the last week for them.

GRAPES are from Eden Gardens in Dillsburg and they are SO GOOD. The variety is called Mars and they are large, deep blue, super sweet and seedless. GET THEM NOW WHILE YOU CAN!

PEARS are from Reider Family Farm in Dover! Kelly Reider works with us at the farm and has a bumper crop of Seckel Pears this summer. The Seckel pear is a dessert pear that's super sweet with a hint of spice. These pears are great for both fresh eating and cooking/canning. We've taste tested them and they're delicious!

Six kittens were born at the farm three weeks ago, and they have been so much fun to watch lately. They are stating to get more curious and investigate their surroundings. There are two orange, two brown striped, and two gray, with one male and one female of each color! We'll be looking for homes for a few of these babies in a few weeks, so if you're interested in a kitten, please let us know.

Our crew is very slim right now so we're stretched thin. We will do our absolute best to reply to emails in a timely fashion, as we always appreciate hearing from you!
