safety first!

Good morning!

The above picture is of Evelyn securely nestled in the tractor bucket picking cherries too high to reach by normal means, from a big old cherry tree a furlong or so from our farmhouse.  Here is my father standing by the trunk:

Dad turned 81 in February and likes any creature older than he is.  I was referring to this as a "wild" cherry tree since no human planted it, but my neighbor, Ross, who is about my father's age and who grew up not far from here, said wild cherries are different and this is what is called a "tame" cherry.  Furthermore, he related, when he was a boy every farmstead had several of these (sometimes a whole row of them), many of which made the one here look like a puny sapling.  For those of you concerned about the safety of hoisting up my daughter in the tractor bucket to get at the cherries-- at least she wasn't standing on a ladder in the tractor bucket to get at even more cherries.  I confess we were tempted, the cherries are so delicious!

New this week is cabbage, very tasty this spring.  I'm offering it in units of about three pounds-- it might be one larger head, or two or even three smaller ones.  And true to form, the zucchini harvest is going crazy-- from one basket on Thursday, to two on Friday, and five on Saturday.  Spinach is done for the spring but I would like to put in a plug for the Swiss chard-- it cooks just like spinach (but don't eat it raw) and has an exceptionally good flavor this year.
