which hand has the kohlrabi in it?

Hello!

Well, last week's delivery went better than the first week-- which wasn't hard-- hopefully all the kinks are worked out now.  I'm going to write only a very short farm update his week as I am eager-- almost desperate-- to plant the winter squash today, and still need to get the field ready.  The above photo is a zucchini plant-- you can see it is flowering and, if you look closely, you can see a tiny little fruit at the base of the flower.  Does this mean we will soon have zucchini?  Yes, it does.

New items this week are strawberries, which hopefully need no introduction, kale, which was virtually unheard of when I first started produce farming 16 years ago, but which now seems to be everywhere, and kohlrabi. This is what kohlrabi looks like:

Kohlrabi is one of the few things which thrives in a wretchedly cold spring, such as the one we just had, and we are harvesting many baskets full.  The flavor is a cross between broccoli and cabbage, the flesh crispy yet juicy, the character modest and virtuous.  Delicious sliced raw in salads, used in place of chips for dipping or instead of crackers for cheese, or cooked any way you would broccoli.  Truly, i can think of but one reason why this vegetable isn't more wildly popular than it is, and that is the thick and inedible peel.  Yes, you must peel this vegetable, and ordinary potato peelers won't do the trick.  At least they won't for me.  Be careful with that knife!

I have the feeling there's something else I'm supposed to tell you, but can't remember what it is.  Oh well.  To the squash field!
