Farm Happenings for Week 23rd

Posted on August 23rd, 2021 by Kelly Morris

PICK UP HOURS: Pickup hours this week and every week are Thursday 3pm-7pm, Friday 11am-7pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. Despite what day you chose when signing up for your share, you are welcome to come during any of our open hours. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before closing to give yourself time to gather your veggies. If you aren't able to make it during our normal pickup hours, please email Katie at farmer@homefields.org and she can arrange for you to pick up on Monday.

FARM UPDATE: August is turning out to be a month of abundant rain. We are grateful for the extra water which saves us time and labor on irrigating crops. However, the heavy rains last week washed out the field where we direct seeded our radishes, beets, and lettuce mix. Farming, like life, requires a delicate balance between extremes. We're debating whether to attempt to save what didn't get washed away or till the field and try again.

Okra is finally beginning to produce in large numbers. I'm leaving this item as a swap in only since I know not everyone is a fan. If you are, please snag some. Susan has some great ideas for how to cook delicious okra. Ask her for her recipes!

We hope you enjoyed the sweet corn last week! We harvested more this week, however, most of this week's harvest is the 2nd ear off each stalk so they are smaller and have less perfect kernel formation. We still felt that they were worth harvesting, though. We're making up for the smaller ears by including more in each bag.

Thank you for your support!
