Farm happenings for Week of July 19th

Posted on July 19th, 2021 by Kelly Morris

PICK UP HOURS: Pickup hours this week and every week are Thursday 3pm-7pm, Friday 11am-7pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. Despite what day you chose when signing up for your share, you are welcome to come during any of our open hours. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before closing to give yourself time to gather your veggies.

SAVE THE DATE for our FALL FUNDRAISERS: Our 25th Annual Golf Tournament and the Picnic in the Fields are happening this September! Golf Tourny info including registration can be found here and Picnic info, including ticket purchasing is here

FARM UPDATE: Weeds are the theme for July. We're harvesting zucchini and cucumbers in the midst of chin high weeds (how do they grow so fast?) and we're fighting the weeds to save long season crops like our peanuts. Whenever possible we use plastic mulch to help us save crops from the weeds, however we can't use plastic with seeds that like to be direct seeded (peas, peanuts, radishes, carrots, etc) and we're very selective about where we use plastic in the pathways since pathway plastic is very labor intensive to put down and take up in the fall. Our watermelons get pathway plastic since their vining growth habit makes any type of pathway mowing or weed whacking impossible.

PYO FIELDS: We have beans as a PYO item again this week. The leaves have been decimated by bean beetles, but let's look on the bright side: this makes it easier to find the beans! We're assigning quarts as the unit of measurement, but feel free to pick as many beans as you'll use (within reason, of course. Please remember that we have 180 shareholders besides you!) Matt has been doing a stellar job clearing the pathways in the PYO field. If you see him, give him a "thanks!"

EXTRAS: This week we have eggs and mushrooms available to purchase as one-time "extras".
