Farm Happenings for March 30, 2024

Posted on March 27th, 2024 by Mark Kastner
As we continue seeding new flats of fresh goodness for Spring/ Summer harvests, I am also "potting up" young plants that are growing from the January and February plantings! The ongoing planting will continue until early May and then pause until mid July when we will prepare for Autumn!

The Onions that I overwintered should be bulbing soon as that process is dictated by day length, and we are rapidly approaching 12 hours of  daylight.  Onions (chemical free) are scarce right now, and I have Scallions in the greenhouse and Chives outside, but they are coming along woefully slow also.
We had a fair amount of Onions in storage, and the cold weather demand overwhelmed supply...a lesson for crop estimates this year!

I continue to promote the importance of good nutritious food and diet, and the great effort we make to contribute to that cause. Then last night the thought struck me, "it's expensive to be unhealthy"! I wish you all good health and wellness.

This week, Spring Break notwithstanding, I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. The Grand Ledge location will change on June 1, with the start of the Farmers Market, but more on that much later. Thank you and I hope to see you soon; our amazing new coworker Brooklyn will keep you updated on social media! More on Brook will continue...
