Farm Happenings for November 8, 2023

Posted on November 5th, 2023 by Mark Kastner
Today we will enjoy 10 hours and about 10 minutes of daylight, and we will be negative below 10 hours by Wednesday. Most plant growth stops or at least dramatically slows down at that point. The greenhouses are already planted for winter production, and that's all I can do.

Approximately February 5, we rise above 10 hours, and it takes about three weeks for plant life to adjust. Beginning today we will transplant to over winter very early Spring harvests, mid March! I start with a lot of Spinach, ad baby lettuce reinforcements, Asian Greens and a mix of cold weather greens for our Spring Mix. And the heated nursery gives us the advantage to restock head lettuce all winter! The Outdoor Cabbage and Kale Family don't get started until  mid February, along with Tomatoes and Peppers.

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon and the indoor Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pickup and scheduled home deliveries. Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery, 11:00-12:00 noon. I hope to see you soon!
