Farm Happenings for March 1, 2023

Posted on February 26th, 2023 by Mark Kastner
Today we enter the third week of the year above the minimum 10 hours of daylight needed to generate meaningful photosynthesis and slowly, I see signs of change. Since we start most of our food crops from seed, I have several stages of growth to manage. The Onions are ready for their first "haircut",and transplant in 4-5 weeks, and the early Tomato plants have already been potted up to individual 2 1/2 pots. The main Tomato, Pepper, and Eggplant crops are up, and we'll plant the first Cucumbers indoors just about  the same time that the onions go out!

I now have a two week window to finish the early planting work, get in the new Organically Certified Potting Soil and amend fertilizers before starting the starter plants for the Home Gardener transplant sales that begin May 10.  Oh, and the Parsley is finally up after 5 weeks, and the  Cabbage starts are screaming to be potted up along with other members of that family!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Indoor Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up and home deliveries, and Saturday, I am  in the parking lot behind Flower Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. I hope to see you soon!
