Farm Happenings for October 12, 2022

Posted on October 9th, 2022 by Mark Kastner
Today we are at 11 hours and 21 minutes of daylight, and discounting the losses due to frost, the rate of plant growth  is visibly slowing down. November 10 or about 4 weeks from now, we slip below 10 hours and most vegetation growth simply stops! The urgency to get the rest of our transplants into the hoop houses is at hand!

I have been growing during  fall, winter and early spring for a few years now, and I have decided to take that experience and note taking to a new level. I am aware of certain limits at our latitude, and the rising cost of propane in the nursery has me thinking of the new techniques I can use to further production and offset those costs. As soon as we finish our transplants and get the garlic in the ground, I will start construction on an incubator within the incubator! In theory, I will be able to grow more variety sooner as well as later. Will Mother Nature let me trick her and pull it off? Stay tuned!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday, at 12:00 noon and the Allen Street Outdoor Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00 (note the time changes). Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am found in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery, 11:00-12:00 noon. There are no more Farmer Markets in Grand Ledge this year, and the new drop off location will be permanent until May, 2023. I hope to see you soon!
