Farm Happenings for August 24, 2022

Posted on August 21st, 2022 by Mark Kastner
The shorter day lengths and cooler nights suggest that change is coming! This week we begin to convert the eight 90' beds in "C" hoop house for fall and winter production of Asian Greens for Salad Mix, and and all of our varieties of Baby Lettuce for colder weather Salad Mixes. The cool weather cabbage crops are maturing nicely, and we are still transplanting outdoors,  Romaine and other Head Lettuce we will offer this Autumn!

A Farmer knows when his melons were dead ripe the morning after the racoons ate them! The melons are excellent this year, but the uncertainty over availability leads to supply problems. I may have to look into some electric fencing for next year. Sorry, me too!

Auto Renew for Fall 2022 CSA is Labor Day, September 5 when the fees for two deliveries will be collected.  I won't have support back up over the holiday weekend,  so there is a 5 day grace period for sorting out any miscues. The first deliveries begin the following week of September 11..

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Farm pick up is Thursday afternoon, and Saturday we are in Grand Ledge for the Market on the Grand, 9:00-1:00. Please see the attachment for some of what we'll have available, and let me know if I can help!
