Farm Happenings for June 22, 2022

Posted on June 19th, 2022 by Mark Kastner
Summer officially begins on Tuesday, June 21, at 5:13 A.M., and our Summer production has already begun! We don't have enough cherry tomatoes to offer the public at large yet, but I am sending some to our institutional customers this week. It seems that every fruiting category from cucumbers to melons are a little behind.

While the Asparagus season was satisfactory, the Strawberry season might be the shortest in memory. While the berries survived the heat last Wednesday and Thursday and the flavor was superb, they will ripen too quickly in this coming week's heat to offer at market. Because of the uncertainty, Strawberries are not on the menu this week. Sweet cherries should be ready in about 2 weeks, but the Blueberries have not begun to blush.

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 2:30-6:30. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday we are in Grand Ledge for the Market on the Grand, 9:00-1:00. I hope to see you soon!
