Farm Happenings for March 19, 2022

Posted on March 16th, 2022 by Mark Kastner

Hello!

I normally begin to Transplant tomatoes into the high tunnels around April 15, and that gives us
about a four week window to get the Spring/ Summer prep work finished. Added to that, a farmer's rule of thumb is that the early Russet Potatoes go in about Good Friday. That means about April 15 for the Potatoes, so I'll letMother Nature be the mediator: good weather, Potatoes outdoors, or bad weather Tomatoes indoors!

I think the frost will be out of the ground by the end of this week, and that means Peas! I have a bed that was covered all winter, so we'll direct seed and no till, so I can plant even if the soil is that gooey, greasy Spring "almost mud". We continue to start flats in the nursery for May transplants. Also, the plants for transplant sales are the focus for plant sales beginning early May! Just a little bit of  sunshine for the next two weeks and the early Spring Greens will be ready for the Markets!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot on Wednesday in Eaton Rapids at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market indoors after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is Farm pick up, and  Saturday morning I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery (for whom we also grow) in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12 :00 noon. I hope to see you soon!
