Farm Happenings for February 5, 2022

Posted on February 2nd, 2022 by Mark Kastner

Good morning!

Without being scientifically exact, about this coming Saturday we will attain 10 hours of daylight (today we are at 9:54)! That means the transplants I started before Christmas and New Years will go into the ground beginning this week and should overcome transplant shock just in time to take advantage of the new growing season! This is important to me because as the winter production begins to wane, we need new and exciting stock to pick up the baton, and RUN!

I have been experimenting with carrot transplants for a couple of years. Conventional wisdom says it can't be done, and done conventionally, I agree. After several approaches, I have some 1200 baby carrot plants, 37 days old, that are going into the high tunnel tomorrow. No guts, no glory! We also have red beets, arugula, head lettuce, bok choy, cilantro, mustards needed for Spring Mix, and more. We begin planting early nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) February 15, so I have about 2 weeks to finish up for early Spring!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon and the Allen Street Market indoors after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pickup, and Saturday morning I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. Please see the attached menu and let me know if I can help. Be safe  and I hope to see you soon!

Thank you,
