Farm Happenings for December 11, 2021

Posted on December 8th, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Good morning!

One of my news-feeds reported a shortage of maple syrup (80% of U.S. consumption comes from Canada) and Fresh Produce in the nation's supermarkets. I don't sell maple syrup, but can refer the consumer to several local sources, and I certainly know a local supplier of Fresh Produce! So far I have been able to satisfy demand by a disciplined harvest per bed feet (like Baby Lettuce) of a given product per week. Lately, however, I have noticed a slight strain from customer demand!

The "auto-renew" feature for my Winter/ Spring CSA is set for December 20, and my online inventory manager (Harvie) will allocate the cold weather produce supply to that CSA group on a priority basis, and tell me what will be available for others and the Allen Street Market, farm pick up, etc. Saturday, December 18, is the last day for the current CSA distributions. The Winter/ Spring CSA session begins January 5 and runs through April 23, 2022. The CSA model gives me a reliable guide to production and harvest, so please give it some consideration as  we enter the coming cold weather.

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market indoors from 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery for all distributions 11:00-12:00 noon. I will visit our climate controlled storage facility this week and will offer a rain check for the shortage of fruit shares this past week. I'm sorry that I ran short!

Thank you,
