Farm Happenings for November 24, 2021

Posted on November 21st, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Good morning!

Ah, Thanksgiving Week, and a short pause in our routine for a relaxing break!

Actually the end of November has a symbolic meaning  for the four season farmer. The swings from sunny, warmer days  and colder nights invite uncertainty inside the hoops with the new young crops vulnerable to both the warm and the cold. From mid October through mid November, there is still a lot of energy in the soil, and that helps to compensate for farmer mistakes on when to close everything up and when to still let the hoop houses breathe. The warmer moist air harbors a lot of disease pathogens that need to be ventilated out, and the young plants need to be protected!

Now the guessing is over and it's time to cover everything with a spun bonded row cover that will help the crops cope with the heavy frosts.

We are fully open for deliveries this week. Our Fall/ Winter CSA ends on Saturday, December 18, and the Allen Street Farmers Market is closed after December 15, and reopens January 5, 2022.
My Winter/ Spring CSA  begins that first week in January, and  I'll talk about the schedule changes in the next few weeks.

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00, Thanksgiving Eve. Friday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am in Grand Ledge for all Saturday deliveries, 11:00-12:00 noon in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery. Please see the attached menu and let me know if I can help!

Thank you,
