Farm Happenings for November 17, 2021

Posted on November 14th, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Hello!

Snowing today, the middle of November, and the outdoor growing season is now  history.

In horticulture (farming) this is known as the Persephone period. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of Nature. In short the beautiful young girl was kidnapped by Hades, the God of Darkness and the Underworld. Demeter cut a deal with Zeus and Hades, but the best she could get was her daughter would return to Earth 8 months of the year but return to live  with Hades for  the remaining four months. Demeter declared darkness and cold over Earth during the 4 months her daughter was missing and Nature would mourn in dormancy.

But then came farmer Mark and his hoop houses! I think I'll go out and pick some lettuce and greens for a salad today! I will also pick some Baby Lettuce Mix for the Saturday CSA distribution as a test for quantity and quality. I already know that it tastes great! I hope to offer it to members at large next (Thanksgiving) week.

This week I am at the Family Fare Parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and  the Allen Street Indoor Farmers Market, 3:00-6:00 after that. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I deliver CSA shares and order requests to the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery 11:00-12:00 noon. Please see the attached menu and let me know if I can help!

Thank you,
