Farm Happenings for October 6, 2021

Posted on October 3rd, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Good morning!

We have 5 weeks left to convert our hoop houses to Fall/ Winter production! November 6, we drop below 10 hours of daylight, and new plant growth virtually stops. I want to hang on to some late Cherry Tomatoes, knowing it will be too late to transplant cold weather crops in their place for Winter harvest. To reconcile this conflict , we will seed Winter Spinach, Lettuce, and other Greens for a late transplant and harvest for very early Spring, about mid March, when most of our Winter fare is finished, and our supply of storage crops like Potatoes and Onions are used up. My heated portion of the nursery is busy all year round!

Except for clean up, transplanting outdoors is complete; the Spinach will do fine through mid November. FedEx has notified me that our order for Seed Garlic will arrive Tuesday. Bed preparation and planting the Garlic starts this week, and we are finished outdoors!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Market located at the corner of Michigan Avenue at Fairview Street after that with new October hours, 3:00 - 6:00. Thursday Afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday we are in Grand Ledge for the Fall Festival, and final Farmers Market for the Year, 9:00-1:00!  The following Saturday, October 16, we start Grand Ledge deliveries in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery, 11:00-12:00, and I'll remind everyone again next week.

Please see the attached menu and let me know if I can help! Also with the later maturing apples available, I can offer sauce blends beginning next week!

Thank you,
