Farm Happenings for December 9, 2020

Posted on December 6th, 2020 by Mark Kastner

Hello!

I have been doing what I do for a while now, and while we are grateful for the strong interest in our produce, I have not seen a surge like this. To compensate, I'll heat the nursery a little warmer, and start replacement greens right after January 1, about 4-6 weeks earlier than past crop planning. I'll compensate for the increased costs for propane and electricity and labor, by bringing our storage crops out for sale in December rather than mid to late January, so look for our menu to expand!

I have two new midi hoops and a little larger one coming into service early spring that will add about 2,000 sq. ft. of protected growing area, and that will really help. To counter, the demand for our Spinach offer last week completely wiped out availability for several harvests! Lauren and Alanna will help me prepare for the production changes before they are back in college in January. We also have a new helper, Jan, who among many life achievements, is also a Master Gardener!

This week Iam at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street distribution will be in the Tannin Italian Restaurant parking lot, Michigan Ave at Shepard St from 4:30-5:30 later that day. Thursday is farm pick up, and Saturday I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon. Please see the attached menu for what we have available this week and let me know if I can help.

Note to our Harvie CSA Members: the Spring Mix description won't fit on  the menu format, but consists of 6 baby lettuces and 5 greens for texture and flavor and is a bit peppery.
