Farm Happenings for September 16, 2020

Posted on September 13th, 2020 by Mark Kastner
Two and a half inches of rain in the last ten days sure cured a lot of problems. The cool nights and plentiful rain in September is fairly predictable as are the shortening hours of daylight. The cool temps favor most late season crops, but dwindling daylight hours also slows growth down!

This is not a problem for most gardeners, but for 4-season growers the challenge is to get all of the winter crops planted, transplanted and about 75% mature by November 5, when we dip below 10 hours of daylight and growth in most plants virtually stops. That date is about 2 months away for crops that we plan to harvest 4-6 months from now!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot on Wednesday at 12:00 noon in Eaton Rapids, and the Allen Street Farmers Market on Michigan Avenue after that Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday we are in Grand Ledge for the Market on the Grand, 9;00-1:00. Please see the attached menu for what we will offer this week. I hope to see you soon!

Thank you,
