Eating with the seasons

Posted on June 10th, 2022 by Stacey Taggart

Ahh!  Summertime here we come!  Technically the first day of summer starts this year next week, on Tuesday, June 21.  We're starting our summer shares just a bit early but we're excited for all the summertime abundance the garden has to offer.  Each year we try to push the seasons and get crops earlier than usual - and we're able to do quite a bit with our hoophouses.  They protect against frosts and wind but since they are not temperature controlled, there is only so much we can do.  We had planned and hoped to have cucumbers and summer squash this first week of summer shares, but also, we're not quite there... so close though!  We'll look forward to enjoying those in just a couple of weeks, maybe sooner!  We do dream of building a temperature controlled greenhouse - seriously, Mason told me of this dream of his on our first date!  :) Having such, we would be able start a few of the heat loving plants early and have them actually produce early.  Plants rely on day lengths and nighttime temperatures to tell them when to start setting and ripening fruit.  In a greenhouse, we can mock that and make the plants do their thing earlier (and later) than usual...  Hopefully someday!  In the meantime, we'll enjoy what the garden is able to produce right now while looking forward to the weeks and months ahead.  Thanks so much for support local food!
