Taking Stock of the Summer Season

Posted on August 24th, 2019 by Zach Hawkins

This week marks the final delivery of the summer CSA. I want to thank you for joining us for a season of fresh, local eating, for sharing in the risks and rewards of small scale farming here in northeastern Indiana. I'm already taking stock of the lessons I've learned this summer and using them to plan for next year. So many things to consider--crop and animal rotations, soil fertility, planting dates. One question that keeps coming to mind is, “How do we get CSA members to visit the farm at least once a season?” It sparks a lot of ideas—work parties, hay rides, potlucks—but this season we found ourselves so consumed by our daily farm work we weren’t able to pursue any of them. We do have one more Fridays on the Farm pizza night left this season, however, so I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to come eat some pizza on the farm as we bid farewell to summer. If you can make it, your first pizza is on us. (Just please send me an email by Wednesday to let me know you’re coming so we can make sure we have enough pizza.)

Thanks for a great summer season!

Your farmer,
Zach

P.S. Don’t forget we still have some spots left in the Autumn CSA, and Harvie Farm Stand is a great option for folks who want to receive a share now and then when we have extra products.
